As you drive along, you'll find a macadam road perfect for parking your car. For those who prefer walking, this is an ideal starting point, but you can also drive closer to the larger parking lot at the end of the macadam path.

Leaving your car at the beginning of the macadam, a walk toward the edge of Kraški Rob awaits. The path gently descends into a forest, surrounded by dense trees with colourful leaves swaying in the breeze. It's an enchanting sight, and as you walk deeper, the forest becomes a playground of adventure with flat paths, rocky sections, and natural obstacles.
Encounter with Climbers
The forest trail eventually leads to the mighty walls where climbers practice their skills. It's a sight to behold, watching them navigate the rocky faces with precision. After a brief rest on a rock, you can continue your journey along the wall, heading back to your starting point through the forest, choosing a different path to keep the adventure alive.
Exploring the Črni Kal Fort
From the forest, you can spot the ruins of the Črni Kal fort standing above. To reach the fort, instead of taking the macadam road, continue straight toward the village. This route is also suitable for cyclists, offering a scenic and engaging ride.
A Historical Marvel
Driving to the village and following the locals' directions, you'll reach the path leading to the fort. This flat, easy trail runs alongside the railway and through the forest, ending abruptly to reveal the ruins against the sky. A narrow wooden bridge takes you through a stone passage to the fort, offering breathtaking views of valleys, hills, and the vast sky.
Safety First
The heights at the fort can be dizzying at first, so caution is advised, especially if you're traveling with children. The ruins provide a vantage point for admiring the landscape and watching climbers scale the walls below.
A Delightful End to the Day
After exploring the fort, a picnic lunch is a perfect way to recharge before heading back through the forest. While we chose two specific hiking trails, the region offers numerous others, mostly flat and easy, except for a few steep sections.

Leaving Črni Kal, consider taking a side road to Koper instead of the highway. This route offers restaurants with delicious food, popular among motorcyclists, unique resting places in nature, and wonderful viewpoints. The side road also leads to the valley of the river Rižana, a beautiful and serene destination.
