Unveiling the Splendor of Koča na Kokoša: Nature's Retreat on the Slovenian-Italian Border
This picturesque destination attracts outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds, including hikers, runners, cyclists, and horse-riding enthusiasts. Its rugged yet manageable terrain makes it ideal for families with younger children, offering a memorable outing in nature. Numerous marked paths lead to the Koča na Kokoša hut from different directions. One popular route starts from the former border crossing at Lipica, following either a road or a steep path that branches off from the road. Alternatively, routes can be taken from Lipiška vrata or Škibinov, as well as from Lokva via the old camp or Lokva through Prelož and past the Vroča spring. For those seeking an accessible and family-friendly option, the route from Lokev is recommended. Starting at the end of the Lokev village near the cemetery, the journey begins with a gradual ascent along a cart road.
After approximately 2 kilometers, the path narrows into a footpath that becomes steeper in certain sections. Opting for the left, gentler route during the ascent, hikers will eventually merge with a small road leading to the Koča na Kokoša hut, situated just 100 meters away. The descent can be made via a slightly steeper rocky path, requiring caution while traversing. About half of the trail is shaded by the forest, providing respite from the sun on warm, sunny days. At the hilltop, the hut offers shelter from the wind, and nearby benches provide ample space for relaxation and enjoying the scenery. Visitors can satisfy their hunger and thirst with a selection of drinks, sweet snacks, stews, and other delicious dishes served at the hut.
Thanks to its favorable climate, Kokoška Hill holds allure throughout the year. The most enchanting walks occur during spring and early summer when the landscape adorns itself in fresh, vibrant hues. The karst plateaus exhibit a stunning array of characteristic and diverse vegetation, including the blossoming of hydrangeas, lilies of the valley, peonies, daffodils, ash trees, cyclamen, and other protected species. While many visitors primarily come to visit the popular mountain hut on Kokoška Hill, the region's charm lies in its captivating peaks and the care taken by the Sežana Mountain Association to maintain the hut. For those who appreciate hearty mountain fare, the hut is open from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening and on most Slovenian and Italian holidays, offering a delightful culinary experience.
Immerse yourself in the beauty of Kokoška Hill and experience the warm hospitality of the Koča na Kokoša hut. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a culinary adventurer, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Kokoška Hill offers a memorable journey that showcases the stunning landscapes and cultural richness of the region.
