A Journey Through History

The museum's location itself is steeped in history, as it occupies the former monastery and castle complex of Bistra pri Vrhnika. This quaint town and castle take their name from the pure water springs found in the region, adding a unique charm to the surroundings. Over the centuries, Bistra has undergone several transformations, serving as a Carthusian monastery, a mansion after renovation, and finally becoming the permanent residence of The Technical Museum of Slovenia in 1951.

Archaeological Discoveries

Evidence of the town's ancient roots was discovered near the river Bistra, with archaeologists unearthing Roman tombstones and an intriguing inscription dedicated to the god Neptune. The foundation of the Bistra monastery can be traced back to the 13th century when the Carthusian order was invited to the Carniola region. The monastery flourished in the 14th century, and its cultural significance is reflected in illuminated manuscripts preserved in the National Library and University Library Ljubljana.

Preserving History Amidst Natural Disasters, Bistra endured natural disasters, earthquakes, and fires. Despite the changes and losses, the basic configuration of the original monastery can still be admired. The great cloister, the monks' cells, and the church, which once formed the core of the complex, have been replaced by an open park. The Baroque Chapel of St. Joseph stands as a testament to the architectural beauty of the past, adorned with stunning frescoes by Anton Cebej.
