Triglav is the highest peak of the Julian Alps and also of Slovenia, and the only peak of both that is higher than 2800 meters. On the north side lies the remnant of the Triglav glacier. The Triglav mountain range is the central part of the Triglav National Park. The Triglav North Face is among the largest faces in Europe. Here’s a suggested 4-day / 3-night solo climbing mount Triglav itinerary , with vehicle drop-off , winter bivouac options , and key safety considerations : Triglav Winter-Ascent Plan (Mid-May) ⚠️ First, a safety reminder: Mid-May is not “spring hiking” season at elevation — it's still winter above 1800m , with snowfields, avalanches possible in the afternoon, and ice-covered via ferrata sections. Crampons, ice axe, helmet, and harness are a must. Ropes optional but recommended if unsure of your solo ability on via ferrata. Weather can change quickly. Always check local forecasts (ARSO) and Triglav National Park conditions before starting. Day-by-Day Itinerary Suggestion DAY 1 Start at Rudno Polje (1345m) – Pokljuka Plateau Hike to Vodnikov dom (1817m) – winter room available ~3h hike, moderate ascent, likely snow starting after 1600m Nice acclimatization day Overnight: Vodnikov dom – winter bivouac room DAY 2 Vodnikov dom → Planika Hut (2401m) → Mt. Triglav Summit (2864m) → return to Planika Snow and ice likely from 1900m up Via ferrata from Planika to summit will be icy/exposed – climb only if confident in solo conditions Summit and return: ~6–8h depending on snowpack and weather Overnight: Planika hut – winter room (sheltered, good condition) DAY 3 Optional: Rest or explore the Kredarica hut area (2515m – also has a winter room, or mountain weather station) Or descend via Krma Valley Possible route: Planika → Krma → Hut in Krma Valley (past Kovinarska koča, may have open bivy spots) Overnight: Wild camp or descend to Valley floor depending on energy/weather DAY 4 Hike out via Krma valley , or loop back towards Pokljuka Reconnect with your pickup/drop-off plan Winter Rooms / Bivouac Info Planika, Vodnikov dom, and Kredarica all have basic winter rooms — wooden bunks, no heating, no food. Bring: Sleeping bag (4-season) Stove + gas (no open fire!) Food for 4 days Headlamp, extra batteries Weather & Conditions Expect: 0–10°C days , colder at night (down to -5°C or lower above 2000m) Snowpack above 1800–2000m Sunrise ~5:30am , sunset ~8:30pm Afternoon storms or fog possible – start early each day Check daily forecast at:🌐 ARSO – Mountain Weather Helpful Links for Climbing Mount Triglav: Triglav Hut Info & Winter Rooms: https://www.pzs.si/ Triglav National Park Maps (PDF): https://www.tnp.si/ GPS Map: Outdooractive or Komoot (search for Triglav routes) Emergency Contacts – Slovenia (2025) General Emergency (Police, Fire, Ambulance): 112 – Central emergency number in Slovenia(Use this for mountain rescue, injury, or accidents ) Mountain Rescue (GRS – Gorska Reševalna Služba): Also reached via 112 Provide: Your exact location (GPS coordinates) Number of people involved Nature of injury/emergency Weather conditions Triglav National Park HQ: Phone: +386 4 578 02 00 Email: info.tnp@tnp.gov.si Mountain Weather Forecast (ARSO): Website: https://meteo.arso.gov.si/met/en/ Especially important for early morning updates Alpine Association of Slovenia (PZS): Website: https://www.pzs.si/ Info on huts, trail conditions, bivouac shelters Closest Mountain Rescue Centers near Triglav: Bohinj GRS Station: +386 41 674 411 Kranjska Gora GRS Station: +386 41 650 858 If you're soloing, it's a good idea to: Leave your planned route with someone Check in daily with a friend or contact Use a GPS beacon or location-sharing app if possible For more travel inspiration, itineraries, and tips, visit Visit Slovenia Tourism . 💡 Your Feedback Matters! - Ticks in Slovenia: Dangers and Measures for Safe Experiences in Nature
Lyme Disease in Slovenia : Prevalence and Precautions- Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is a growing health concern in Slovenia, transmitted by Ixodes ricinus ticks found in forested and grassy areas. Ticks in Slovenia Awareness of its prevalence and preventive measures is crucial for both residents and visitors. Prevalence of Lyme Disease in Slovenia Lyme disease cases in Slovenia are increasing, especially in the northeastern and central regions. Climate change has contributed to this rise by affecting tick activity. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and erythema migrans rash. Early detection and antibiotic treatment are essential to prevent severe complications affecting joints, heart, and nervous system. Precautions Against Lyme Disease 1. Awareness of Tick Habitats Ticks thrive in wooded and grassy areas, particularly from spring to autumn. Stick to paths and avoid tall grass. 2. Protective Clothing- Wear long sleeves, pants, and closed shoes. Tuck pants into socks and choose light-colored clothing to spot ticks easily. 3. Use of Repellents Apply DEET or permethrin-based repellents on clothing and skin, following instructions for reapplication. 4. Regular Tick Checks After outdoor activities, check for ticks on yourself and pets, focusing on warm areas like armpits and groin. Remove ticks with fine-tipped tweezers. 5. Vaccination and Awareness Campaigns Though no human vaccine exists, public health campaigns can educate on symptoms and the importance of medical attention. In summary, Lyme disease is a significant issue in Slovenia, with rising prevalence due to environmental factors. Individuals can enjoy Slovenia's natural beauty by taking preventive measures while minimizing infection risk. Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne infectious disease in Slovenia. It occurs nationwide, with around 5,000–7,000 cases reported annually. The risk of infection is highest from February to November, with mild winters and wet springs favouring the occurrence of ticks. When exploring Slovenia's beautiful landscapes, it's essential to be aware of these risks and take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Are There Ticks in Slovenia? Ticks are widespread in Slovenia, particularly in forests, meadows, and gardens. The most common species is the Ixodes ricinus tick. They are active from March to November, depending on the temperature. Ticks thrive at altitudes up to 600 meters, with their presence decreasing in higher regions. They become active when the soil temperature reaches 5−7 °C and hibernate when it drops to the same level. Ticks in Slovenia What's the Worst Time of Year for Ticks? Ticks are most active from spring to autumn, particularly from February to November. The peak season coincides with the warmer months, making it crucial for visitors to take preventive measures during this period. When venturing into nature, proper clothing and repellents are highly recommended. Conclusion Ticks are a notable concern in Slovenia, especially during the warmer months. - Travelling to Slovenia with a pet
5 good reasons to choose Slovenia for your dog-friendly trip. The country of Slovenia is one of the hidden gems of Europe . Tucked away between Italy and Croatia, it’s one of my favorite European countries. There’s beautiful mountain scenery, plentiful history, and a silvery coastline, and it’s more affordable than the surrounding countries (yet most young people speak English). Plus, it’s a wonderfully dog-friendly country! Travelling to Slovenia with a pet: Dog-Friendly Culture: Slovenia generally has a welcoming attitude towards dogs. Many restaurants, cafes, and even some shops allow dogs on their premises. You'll find plenty of opportunities to enjoy meals and explore towns with your furry companion. Stunning Natural Beauty: Slovenia boasts diverse landscapes, from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic coast. Hiking trails, lakes, and forests offer endless opportunities for outdoor adventures with your dog. Easy Travel Within the Country: Slovenia is a relatively small country, making it easy to travel around by car. Public transportation options, such as trains and buses, are also generally dog-friendly. Affordable Accommodation: You can find a range of dog-friendly accommodation options in Slovenia, from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious hotels. Pet-Friendly Regulations: As an EU member, Slovenia has clear and relatively straightforward regulations for travelling with pets. Ensure your dog has the necessary vaccinations, a microchip, and a valid pet passport. Important Note: Always check specific regulations and restrictions with individual businesses and accommodation providers before your trip. For a trip with a small dog in Slovenia, both the coast and the mountains offer unique advantages: Coast: Pros: Dog-Friendly Beaches: Several designated dog beaches exist along the coast, allowing your dog to enjoy the water and sand freely. Pleasant Climate: The coastal region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters, making it comfortable for both you and your dog. Variety of Activities: Explore charming coastal towns like Piran and Izola, enjoy leisurely walks along the promenade, and indulge in fresh seafood. Cons: Summer Crowds: The coast can get crowded during peak season, which may be less enjoyable for your dog. Mountains: Pros: Stunning Scenery: The Julian Alps offer breathtaking views and endless hiking trails suitable for various fitness levels. Peace: Escape the crowds and enjoy the tranquility of nature. Dog-Friendly Accommodation: Many mountain resorts and guesthouses welcome dogs. Cons: Weather Variability: Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for changes in temperature and potential rain. Altitude: Higher altitudes can be challenging for some dogs, especially those with respiratory issues. Recommendations: Consider your dog's breed and temperament: If your dog enjoys swimming and warmer weather, the coast might be a better choice. If your dog is more active and enjoys hiking, the mountains could be ideal. Research specific locations: Look for towns and villages with designated dog parks, beaches, and hiking trails. Book accommodation in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure you have dog-friendly options. Hiking Around Lake Bohinj: A Must-Do Experience A walk around Lake Bohinj is almost obligatory for every visitor who comes to the region—and it’s a pet-friendly paradise! Whether you take the full circular route or shorten it by exploring just the northern or southern shore, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Slovenia’s largest natural lake. What Makes Lake Bohinj Special? Lake Bohinj is a tectonic lake, formed by the Bohinj Glacier, and is the largest in Triglav National Park . It boasts crystal-clear waters that refresh three times a year, and its main tributary, the Savica River , originates from the stunning Triglav Lakes Valley . Pet-Friendly Tips for Your Walk 🐾 Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leash in protected areas.🐾 Bring plenty of water, as some sections have limited access to fresh water.🐾 Consider visiting in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds. Historical and Natural Wonders Around Bohinj The Church of St. John the Baptist. One of the most iconic landmarks in Bohinj, this church dates back to before 1300 . With its rich medieval architecture and scenic location near the bridge, it’s a fantastic spot for photography and a peaceful rest stop during your walk. The Govic Waterfall: A Hidden Gem This spectacular waterfall appears only after heavy rainfall, bursting from a cave above the northern shore of Lake Bohinj. When active, the waterfall roars as it plummets down the rock face—an unforgettable natural spectacle! 🐾 Note: The path to the Govic Waterfall can be dangerous during peak water flow, so always check local conditions before heading out with your pet. Mrzli Studenec Nature Trail: A Forest Wonderland For those who enjoy dense spruce forests and historical trails , the Mrzli Studenec Nature Trail is a fantastic option. This 3.5 km circular route takes you past remnants of World War I , peat bogs, and stunning viewpoints. Information boards along the way provide insights into the flora, fauna, and history of the region. Why Visit? ✔️ Short and easy, suitable for all fitness levels and pet-friendly. ✔️ Educational stops on Pokljuka Plateau , the largest plateau in the Julian Alps . ✔️ A great opportunity to spot Western Capercaillie and Grouse , making it a nature lover’s dream. 🐾 Tip: Always stay on marked trails to help protect the delicate alpine ecosystem. Across “Stan” to Podkoren: A Panoramic Hike For those visiting Kranjska Gora , the Stan to Podkoren trail is an easy yet rewarding hike. Starting from the Tourist Info Centre Kranjska Gora , the trail takes you through meadows, forests, and over small creeks before reaching Podkoren , a charming Alpine village. Highlights of the Trail Breathtaking views of the Julian Alps. A peaceful walk through open meadows and historic landmarks . Visit the World Cup Alpine Skiing track and the memorial plaque of Sir Humphry Davy , a renowned scientist and inventor. 🐾 Good to Know: The trail is well-marked and suitable for dogs, but some sections involve slight elevation gain, so bring water for both you and your pet. Veterinary Care: Veterinary care in Slovenia is generally good. Find a vet in advance: Locate English-speaking veterinarians in the areas you plan to visit. Carry your dog's medical records: Bring a copy of your dog's vaccination records and any relevant medical history. Consider pet insurance: Check if your current pet insurance policy covers travel to Slovenia. By carefully considering your dog's needs and preferences, you can choose the best region for travelling to Slovenia with a pet. Travel with your dog to Europe safely and ready! A Sweet Pause: Exploring Slovenia's Desserts Izolanka: A Cake with a Story to Tell Imagine the sun-kissed shores of Izola, the sea breeze swirling through the air, and the promise of something sweet lingering in the wind. It was here, at the Café Pri Ekremu, that the Izolanka was born in 2011. The cake is a delicate blend of soft sponge, rich vanilla cream, dark chocolate, and crunchy walnuts, with a refreshing hint of orange. Together, these ingredients mirror the elements of Izola—sea, sun, and wind—inviting anyone who tastes it to return for more. But there’s more to the Izolanka than just its incredible flavor. The cake’s name was chosen by the children of Izola, who were asked to find a name that was sweet, neat, juicy, and just a little bit crazy. And they nailed it. Izolanka is a dessert that embodies all of these qualities, ready to be served to anyone looking for a taste of Izola’s sweetness. - The Boka Waterfall: A Majestic Wonder in Slovenia
Slovenia is a land of pristine natural beauty, and one of its most awe-inspiring gems is the Boka Waterfall (Slap Boka). Known as the mightiest and most water-rich waterfall in Slovenia, Boka is a breathtaking spectacle, standing 144 meters tall and spanning 18 meters in width. It's no surprise that this majestic cascade is considered one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. How to Get to Boka Waterfall Nestled in the Soča Valley, Boka Waterfall is easily accessible and offers a rewarding journey for nature enthusiasts. By Car : The waterfall is visible from the road connecting Bovec to Žaga. Use the provided Google Maps link for exact directions. Hiking to the Viewpoint : Park near the bridge on the Bovec-Žaga road. From the bridge, follow the marked trail to a panoramic viewpoint, which is about a 15-minute walk with moderate effort. Adventurous hikers can continue uphill to a viewpoint overlooking the waterfall. This trail requires 45 minutes of steep climbing but rewards you with unparalleled views of Boka's roaring beauty. When to Visit The best times to visit are spring and autumn , when snowmelt and seasonal rainfall enhance the waterfall's flow, sometimes reaching an impressive 100 cubic meters per second . During these periods, the thunderous cascade is especially photogenic and mesmerizing. In the drier summer months, the flow reduces significantly, but the surrounding landscape remains enchanting. The Legend of Boka While the Boka Waterfall captivates with its natural grandeur, a darker tale lingers in folklore. Legend tells of two hungry children who sought shelter in a house on the hill. The seemingly kind old lady who welcomed them had sinister plans to harm them. In a desperate act of self-defence, the boy turned the axe she planned to use on them against her. It is said her spilled blood transformed into the mighty Boka Waterfall, a striking contrast to the area's serene beauty. Why Visit Boka Waterfall? Unmatched Beauty : Framed by the rugged Kanin mountains, Boka is an unforgettable sight. Accessible Adventure : The short hike makes it a perfect destination for families and nature lovers. Rich Surroundings : Explore nearby attractions in the Soča Valley, such as the emerald-green Soča River, Triglav National Park, and the charming town of Bovec. - Izolanka: A Sweet Ode to Izola at the Ice Cream Parlor and Café Pri Ekremu
Discover the flavors of Izola through the iconic Izolanka and the vibrant Café Pri Ekremu When you visit the charming coastal town of Izola, there's one sweet treat you absolutely cannot miss: the Izolanka. This special cake, born from the heart of Izola in 2011, has become the symbol of the town's culinary spirit. In this blog post, we'll take you on a delicious journey through its origins and the vibrant café where it all began—Café Pri Ekremu. Get ready to uncover the secrets behind the creation of the Izolanka and why it is the perfect representation of Izola's flavors, tradition, and innovation. Izolanka: A Cake with a Story to Tell Imagine the sun-kissed shores of Izola, the sea breeze swirling through the air, and the promise of something sweet lingering in the wind. Café Pri Ekremu: A Legacy of Innovation and Tradition The story of Café Pri Ekremu goes beyond the creation of the beloved Izolanka. This café, an institution in Izola, has a history dating back to 1952 when the family of Ajhan Saliji, the current manager, moved to the region from Macedonia. Starting with a small ice cream parlor in Izola’s town center, the family moved to the Sončno nabrežje area in 1964, where the café is still located today. The café has seen generations of the Saliji family working together to build a space that blends tradition with modernity, with a focus on healthy, local ingredients and sustainability. In recent years, the café underwent a major renovation, breathing new life into the space. The changes were not just aesthetic; they included the addition of a small boutique hotel, perfect for tourists seeking comfort and convenience in Izola. The café now features a fresh ambiance, inviting locals and visitors alike to experience the best of Izola, whether it's a coffee, a delicious dessert, or a healthy breakfast made with seasonal ingredients. The Evolution of Ice Cream and Desserts at Café Pri Ekremu Under the guidance of the third-generation Saliji family, the café has made strides in offering more than just traditional desserts. Over the last decade, the café has worked closely with both Italian and local experts to create a line of desserts and ice creams that focus on natural ingredients, good texture, and vibrant flavors. Ajhan’s passion for healthy, clean desserts took off after he met an Italian technologist, who helped him rethink the café's approach to desserts. This experience led him to discover his true mission: to sell desserts and ice cream that are healthy and made with the finest ingredients. As for the most popular offerings at the café? The Izolanka remains the top choice among customers, closely followed by the pistachio cake and the ever-popular pistachio extreme ice cream. And whether you’re after a sweet treat or a refreshing scoop, you’ll find that Café Pri Ekremu’s offerings are always made with love and a focus on health. A Cake that Represents Izola’s Heritage Izolanka is not just a cake; it is a representation of Izola itself. Created with the help of local primary schools and the Tourist Board of Izola, the Izolanka was designed to be Izola’s answer to Bled’s famous cream cake, kremšnita. The cake consists of layers of white and dark sponge cake, made with walnuts, and a luscious natural vanilla cream. The subtle addition of fresh orange juice gives it a lightness and refreshment that mirrors the sunny climate of Izola. It is a dessert that tells the story of Izola’s people, its flavors, and its traditions. Sustainability and Innovation at Café Pri Ekremu Café Pri Ekremu has always been at the forefront of sustainability, with a commitment to environmentally friendly practices. Before even opening their boutique hotel, the family sought Green Key certification, which recognizes businesses committed to reducing their environmental impact. They also plan to apply for the Green Cuisine label, and they’re constantly innovating in the kitchen by introducing new dessert offerings. The family works hard to stay in tune with customer preferences, especially with the growing demand for vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free options. In fact, 40% of the café's ice cream sales now come from vegan variants, and the dessert menu has expanded to include more choices for those with dietary restrictions. The Future of Café Pri Ekremu: More Than Just Ice Cream Looking to the future, the Saliji family has big plans. They aim to continue expanding their offerings, with a focus on local farms and sustainable practices. There are also plans to increase their presence on social media, helping to share the café’s story with a wider audience. And if you’re a fan of breakfast or brunch, you’re in luck—Café Pri Ekremu now serves fresh, seasonal breakfasts and brunches daily, made with the finest local ingredients. They’ve even added non-alcoholic cocktails and flavored lemonades to the menu, with plans to introduce flavored hot chocolates in winter. Visit Café Pri Ekremu and Experience Izola’s Sweetest Side Café Pri Ekremu is more than just a café; it is a place where history, tradition, and innovation meet. Whether you’re enjoying a slice of Izolanka or savoring a scoop of pistachio ice cream, you’ll find that every bite is a reflection of Izola’s vibrant culture and warm hospitality. So why wait? Make sure to stop by Café Pri Ekremu to indulge in a truly unique culinary experience. Follow us on social media for more travel inspiration, tips, and updates about this sweet spot in Izola. - Why Now is the Best Time to book a Hotel with Spa Over Skiing
Explore an Affordable and Relaxing Winter Getaway in the spa. Winter holidays are evolving. While skiing has long been a popular choice, rising costs and crowded resorts have made it a luxury for the few. Instead, why not consider an alternative that combines relaxation, wellness, and breathtaking views? Coastal hotels offering spas, saunas, fitness centres, and other amenities are ideal for those looking to unwind without breaking the bank. The Rising Costs of Skiing vs. Spa Retreats A day on the slopes now costs as much as a luxurious overnight stay at a 4- or 5-star hotel. Ski passes, equipment rental and lessons can quickly add to an extravagant expense. In contrast, coastal hotels often offer comprehensive winter packages that include: Accommodation with breakfast or half-board Access to indoor pools, saunas, and fitness centres Lower off-season rates with no crowds Wellness treatments tailored for ultimate relaxation W hy Winter is the Perfect Time for a Coastal Escape 1. No Summer Crowds Unlike summer, when coastal hotels are bustling, winter offers a tranquil atmosphere. Enjoy the peace and quiet of uncrowded spas, pools, and saunas. 2. Value for Money Winter packages often come with incredible discounts. For the price of a single ski pass, you can enjoy a luxurious overnight stay with breakfast and spa access. 3. Wellness Focus While skiing can be physically taxing, coastal hotels provide the perfect environment to relax and rejuvenate. Warm up in saunas, take a dip in heated pools, and indulge in spa treatments designed to melt away stress. 4. Weather That’s Just Right Winter at the coast brings crisp, refreshing air without the harshness of the mountains. Take a stroll along the beach, enjoy scenic views, and soak in the serenity. Belvedere Hotel Skiing: A Luxury for the Elite? Why a Coastal Retreat is the Smarter Choice Over the years, skiing has become increasingly exclusive, with costs climbing steeply, making it less accessible to many families and travelers. Consider this: The True Cost of a Ski Vacation Ski Passes Daily ski passes in popular European resorts can cost anywhere from €50 to €80 per adult , with children’s passes averaging €30 to €50 . For a family of four, this alone can total €200 per day . Equipment Rentals Renting skis, boots, and helmets for a family can add an additional €120 to €200 per day . Accommodation Lodging in ski resorts during peak season ranges from €150 to €400 per night for mid-tier hotels or chalets, with higher prices for premium stays. Dining Costs On-mountain dining is notoriously expensive, with lunches often costing €15–€25 per person , not to mention après-ski drinks and snacks. Adding these up, a single day on the slopes for a family of four can easily exceed €500 , making a week-long trip a significant financial commitment. The Coastal Alternative: Luxury Without the Expense By comparison, a stay at a seaside hotel offering spa and wellness facilities provides not just relaxation but incredible value: Accommodation with Wellness Amenities Stay in a 4- or 5-star hotel with access to heated indoor pools, saunas, and fitness centers for as little as €99 per person per night , with discounts often available for extended stays. All-Inclusive Packages Many hotels offer half-board options , including lavish breakfasts and themed dinners, such as Prekmurje regional cuisine, ensuring excellent meals without additional costs. Family-Friendly Pricing Children often stay at heavily discounted rates or even for free, with amenities like play areas, childcare, and family pools included. Activities and Relaxation Instead of spending on ski passes and equipment, enjoy spa treatments, tranquil beach walks, or a cozy book by the sea—all included in many packages or available at minimal additional cost. For the price of a single day of skiing, you can enjoy two nights at a coastal retreat with all the luxury and none of the stress or expense. The best time to book a Hotel is now. Why Now is the Perfect Time for a Coastal Getaway Unlike the summer months when coastal destinations are crowded and prices peak, winter brings calm and incredible deals. Enjoy the unique ambience of the seaside off-season, where wellness and relaxation take centre stage. Compare this to a bustling ski resort, and the choice becomes clear: a coastal retreat is not only more affordable but also more rejuvenating. Choose Relaxation Over Crowds. The best time to book a Hotel is now! Whether you’re looking for relaxation or a break from the chaos of everyday life, a winter spa retreat offers it all. This winter, trade the slopes for saunas and the chaos of ski resorts for the calm. By choosing a hotel with wellness facilities, you’ll enjoy a rejuvenating holiday that’s as affordable as it is luxurious. We Value Your Feedback!
